Questions climbers ask
Do I need climbing experience to summit Carstensz Pyramid?
Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m) is a technical rock climb with fixed ropes, ascending and abseiling sections, and a Tyrolean traverse near the summit. You should have good fitness and basic rope skills. Prior climbing experience is strongly recommended. During the preparation days in Timika our guides run a safety briefing and gear check, so let us know your experience when you book.
Is the expedition officially licensed and safe?
Yes. PT Adventure Carstensz holds a nature-tourism business permit in the utilisation zone of Lorentz National Park, and every climber receives a travel permit (Surat Keterangan Jalan) issued through the Central Papua Regional Police. Our team includes experienced master guides (1 guide per 6 climbers), a doctor and a security team, with medical checks before and after the expedition. The summit is our goal. Safety is our priority.
How long is the expedition and where does it start?
The program starts in Timika. You spend 3 preparation days there (airport pick-up, document verification, medical check, briefings and gear inspection), then a 4-day helicopter expedition: fly to Yellow Valley base camp, acclimatise, make the summit attempt, and fly back to Timika for a post-expedition check, debriefing and farewell dinner.
How much does it cost and how do I book?
Open trips start from USD 7,500 net per person (October 2026, minimum 24 climbers). Private trips are USD 25,000 net per person. Flights to Timika and travel insurance are not included. Booking needs a 50% down payment to process your SKJ; the balance is paid after your MCU in Timika. Contact us on WhatsApp at +62 822 2775 2011 or email info@adventurecarstensz.com.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Weather in the Carstensz area changes quickly, and afternoon rain is common, so summit attempts start in the early morning hours. Helicopter flights only operate in safe conditions, and our lead guide makes the final call on every summit push. If conditions are unsafe, we wait or adjust the plan. We never take risks with your safety to stick to a schedule.
